About Walailak Abode of Culture

Arts and culture or the world “culture” alone ultimately refer to people’s way of lives, which has accumulated over years and is exhibited in both abstract and concrete forms. Members (humans) in that particular community collaborate to adopt, apply and pass it on. While the concrete objects can be visually appreciated such as architecture, performing art, and handicrafts, those being abstract in their nature communicate their sentimental and spiritual value such as belief, knowledge, thought and wisdom.

Arts and culture or culture (either will suffice) derive itself from the relationship between humans and nature, humans and humans and society, and humans and supernatural beings. Establishment of such a relationship gives birth to the social structure which serves as a factor of sustainability and identity. Therefore, it is stated that “arts and culture is a breath of the society, a fortress guarding the nation and, thereby, preserving arts and culture is unmistakably the way to preserve the nation.”

Given the elaborated utmost importance of arts and culture, Walailak Abode of Culture of Walailak University has continuedly and actively undertaken a mission of “preserving arts and culture”, officially enshrined as one of the four missions of Walailak University for stability of Thai arts and culture. That is because if Thai arts and culture sustain, so will the Thai nation.

In Walailak University Act., the concept behind the university’s inception has been described “Walailak University is the university dedicated to improving economy in parallel with culture by providing cultural studies in order to preserve and pass on identity and heritage of the nation’s noble custom and culture”. To actualize this concept contributing to the society, nation and country, the unit commissioned to preserve arts and culture was finally established. Committee for Arts and Culture Preservation was initially appointed in 1998 which was later changed to “Abode of Culture Project”. On 1st April, 2010, Walailak University Council approved of an official inception of the unit in charge of preserving arts and culture under the name “Walailak Abode of Culture” whose operation cover three major areas of responsibilities carried out by three main teams:

1. Team for academic and research of art and culture
